Philmont 2019 FAQ's RESERVE YOUR SPACE -$100 DEPOSIT DUE 2/12/18

Posted on Feb 6 2018 - 10:33pm

  • Q. As a scout or adult, can I split the camp time with another?
  • A. No. Unlike local resident summer camps, all participants must be present the entire backcountry portion of the trip.
  • Q. If the formal Philmont program days are from June 28 through July 10, 2019, why are we leaving about 18:00 on June 26 and arriving home on July 11 around 08:00 on July 11?
  • A. The dates and your payment will cover round trip on Amtrak from Fullerton CA to Raton NM,  This is a 23-hour trip.  We will then spend the night of June 27 at Philmont base camp acclimating to 6500+'. The Philmont program begins at 12:00 on June 28 through July 10 at 11:00.  The return ride home is also 23-hours having the crews back in Fullerton CA on July 11.
  • Q. Do I have to take the train to Raton NM?  Can I drive or Fly?
  • A. The train offers an experience many have not had.  It is interesting, cost-efficient, allows for the group to travel together, provides some amazing scenery and can be somewhat relaxing.  Of course, you may choose to arrange your own transportation and the train and bus fees will be removed from your total cost.   If you like to dive the 1000 miles each way with a car of scouts after a long 10 days in the backcountry I would like to hear all about it in August of 2019.  Flights in and out of RTN are expensive even if you own your own plane. Then you will still need a ride to  Cimarron NM and leave your rental at camp for 12 days.
Now that you are serious about going to Philmont, here is a quick overview itinerary:
  • June 26 Apx. 18:00 depart FUL Amtrack to Raton NM.  23-hours priced at regular car seat (no sleeper unless you choose to pay more).
  • June 27 Arrive in Raton, Unload train and load gear into a big yellow school bus. Stop in town for a fast food dinner.  1.5 hr bus ride to Philmont for an over "extra" overnight.
  • June 28 Morning free to check out base camp.  12:00 meet backcountry guide, quick equipment check and strategic planning session.
  • June 29 Formalize trek logistics, pick-up crew gear, health check and review, personal gear shake-down and final weight check.  Attend religious ceremony of your choice or not. Spend last night on a mattress for 10 days.
  • June 30 Leave base camp for the backcountry.
  • July 9 Return from the backcountry, shower, return gear, shower, wash stinky clothes, shower, eat, shower, and closing campfire.
  • July 10 Bus to Raton and depart Raton NM via Amtrack bound for Fullerton (unless you want to go to Chicago).
  • July 11 Arrive home and sleep for a full 24-hours
If you are committed to going in 2019, REMEMBER THAT YOUR $100 DEPOSIT IS DUE THIS MONDAY 2/12/18.  SPACE MAY BE LIMITED.  Philmont has a 12 individual (scout and adult total) per crew maximum.  Each crew must be a balance of scouts and adults.  We must have a minimum of 14 deposits of which at least 6 committed adults to have 2 crews or all deposits after the first 12, may be placed on a waiting list.  Philmont accepts scouts and adults from around the world, so reservations are a requirement to ensure no scout opportunity is wasted.  Deposits to Philmont are not refundable (but transferable).  Let me know if you have any questions.

Philmont Update 2/1/18

Posted on Feb 2 2018 - 12:19am

Philmont Update - As of today, we have a combination of 11 scouts and scouters indicating they are committed to experience Philmont in 2019.  An additional 9 folks have indicated definite interest in joining the expedition.  We will have enough for two crews if all 20 individuals commit.  To start formalizing and reserving the final number of expedition crews, it is time to submit a $100 per person deposit.  Based on the number of deposits made by the February 12th meeting we will determine how many crews the Troop can commit to.   For safety and environmental impact reasons, Philmont Scout Reservation limits crews to a total of 12 individuals and a balanced scout to adult ratio.  Ideally, we will have space for all who want to go however, we are obligated to follow the crew size rules making this a situation of numbers.  Spaces will be reserved in order of payment deposit date.  Deposits are non-refundable (but are transferable) after payment is mailed to Philmont on February 13th.   If you have any questions, contact Mr. LoBue at rn2fly@earthlink.net with Philmont 2019 in the subject line.

Philmont 2019 - Interested? Now is the time to sign-up.

Posted on Jan 28 2018 - 4:13pm

Philmont is the pinnacle scouting experience.  Thousands of young men and adult who have spent time backpacking through the Santo De Christo Mountian range at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico recall it being the best memory of their entire scouting career.   At the September Court of Honor, this year's troop 660 Philmont Crew shared their photos, movies, and memories.   Securing space at Philmont is not easy, in fact, access is by lottery and many scouts never have the opportunity to go.  Troop 660 has been chosen and has a total of 30 spaces for a 12-day trek from June 28 through July 10, 2019.  Additional days for travel will bring this trip to 15 days.   This opportunity may not take place again until 2020 or later.  The challenge is we need to submit our first payment at the end of this week to secure space.  To help interested and committed scouts and adults learn more and make a decision here are some key facts, a powerpoint presentation overview, and links to informative websites and movies about Philmont.    If you will be age 13 and have completed the 8th grade or will be 14 or older by June 28, 2019,  you are eligible to go to Philmont.
